What we did here
The existing deck was structurally fine for people and nowhere near adequate for a roof. That is the usual answer, and it is the first thing we check when somebody asks about converting one.
New piers, a new frame, and a roof that ties into the existing ridge rather than sitting against the wall under it. The difference is a flashing detail that will not leak in ten years versus one that will.
The photographs are taken from inside the house looking out on purpose. The honest question about a porch is what it does to the room it opens off, and this one turned a dark breakfast area into the brightest space on the main floor.
A deck built to carry people is not built to carry a roof. That is where every porch conversation starts.
